My daughter has less oppotunity to write Japanese since we came here and she forgot many characters of Katakana. I found it an issue and had her practice Katakana so that she remember the difference between "シ", "ツ", "ン" and "ソ" She god sad because she remember she used to write all of them. Writing Katakana, she bent down her head. When I asked her what happened, she burst into tears and said "It is so complicated!!"
That reminds me of my childhood. Comforting her, I talked her about how I struggled with them when I was a child.

こちらに来て平仮名、カタカナを書く機会が殆どなくなってしまった娘は、特にカタカナの忘却が激しく、1/3程は書けなくなってしまっています。
これはいかんと先日から出来るだけ書かせるようにしているのですが、「ツ」「シ」「ン」「ソ」でかなり躓いているようです。
「サシスセソ」と書かせたら
「サツス。。」となってしまいました。
セとソはそもそも忘れているようです。
「『シ』は上のチョンチョンは斜めに書き、それが縦に並んでいるんだよ。ちょっと書いてみよう」と促したら、とたんに娘は俯きがちに。
暫くして前を向きなおした娘の顔は、案の定赤くなって、涙を浮かべていました。
「あれ、どうしたの？」と聞いたら、今まで溜まっていたものが噴火するかのように大声で泣きだし、
「ややこしいよおおおお！！！」
そういえば私も小さい頃、シとツが似ているなぁと苦労したなぁと思いだしました。
ああ、なんて子供って可愛いんだろう。ややこしくて泣き出す娘に萌えました。
