I borrowed this Japanese picture book from a library. It is about the tsunami that occured 4 years ago. This tsunami is the one that came after the terrible earthquake.
This author whose child died by tsunami decided to write this picture book to let every Japanese know this disaster. I thought it is very worth while to read for my daughter because we are also sufferers of the earthquake.
I read with my daughter in bed.
After I finished reading, she had tears in her eyes and asked
"The boy is still alive?"
Description of the book was very indirect, but it is still seemed to be shocking for her.
She began to cry.
I thought this is good for her, but I found she is not old enough to understand.
I will read couple of years later.
「ハナミズキのみち」という絵本を、図書館で見つけました。
震災時の津波で息子さんを亡くされた作家さんが数年かけて作った絵本だそうです。最初は何の本か分からなかったのですが、パラパラと数ページ読んだときにそういう内容のものだという事が分かりました。
私もこの震災は後世に伝えていくべきものだと思ってるので、娘にもこのことが少しでも分かればなと思い借りてきました。
今日寝かしつけの時、早速読み聞かせをしました。
娘は最初何の話か分からないながらも、読み進めていくうちに次第に掴んだようです。
「この男の子はまだ生きているの？」と聞いてきました。
答えに詰まりました。娘は目に沢山涙をためているし、どう私が答えたら正しく娘の心に届くのか、いろんな想いが頭をめぐりました。
この絵本は、絵本を読む対象を前提にしているためかなり婉曲的な言い回し方をしています。そのため分からないお子さんは分からないことも、あるかもしれません。しかし娘はかなりその内容を掴んでしまったようで、大号泣を始めてしまいました。
私としてはこの災害を心にとめておきたいという気持ちで借りたまでであり、ここまで娘が泣いてしまうのはかなりの想定外でした。
娘には年齢的、また性格的に、ちょっと早かったのかもしれません。
もっと大きくなったときに改めてもう一度読みたいなと思いました。
